Book Distill

A tech book distilled into a faithful note: 80% of the value in one read.

FR EN

"Here's the Clean Code PDF, distill it."

The skill maps chapters using the Adler method (core, supporting, skim), reads targeted sections with high information density, takes verbatim notes, then distills by connected themes rather than chapter by chapter. Every quote is verified word-for-word against the extracted text, and the final note is self-contained: a reader with no prior background can use it.

A.

What it does

Maps the book Adler-style (chapters ranked core / support / skim), reads with intent, takes verbatim-first notes, distills by themes into linked ideas rather than a chapter-by-chapter summary, adds counterpoints, and verifies every citation word-for-word against the extracted text (check-claim.py). Quality loop until at least 85/100.

B.

When to use it

When you provide a book file or ask to summarize or distill a book. Produces a self-contained note: the reader hasn't read the book and may have no background in the domain.

The stance

The stance: a summary from memory lies. Here every citation is verified word-for-word against the extracted text, and the note is distilled by linked ideas (not chapter by chapter) to stay memorable and faithful. This is the skill that feeds this site's library.

Frequently asked questions

When should I use book-distill instead of just asking for a summary?

A summary from memory reconstructs what an LLM thinks it read, with inaccurate quotes and gaps. Book-distill reads the actual text, verifies every quote word-for-word, and structures ideas thematically so the result stays memorable.

Is the note useful if I haven't read the book?

Yes, that's the point. The note is designed to be self-contained: no prior reading or domain background required.

Does the skill invent counterpoints, or do they come from the book?

Any added counterpoints are clearly flagged as such and kept separate from extracted content. The skill doesn't put words in the book's mouth.
